Got error "Your bootable USB drive could not be created." while creating Windows 7 bootable USB in Boot Cam Assistant

To install Windows 7 on Macbook Pro, you need Boot Cam Assistent app. It's built in OS X. Note that I'm using Macbook Pro 13'' Late 2011 and Max OS X Mountain Lion 10.8. I'm using Boot Cam Assistant to create a bootable Windows installation USB so I don't need Windows Installation DVD.

Note that before starting Boot Cam Assistant, I enabled the option to create install USB in Boot Cam Assistant (BCA) as following:
- Go to Finder -> Applications -> Utilities
- Right click on Boot Cam Assistant.app and select Show Package Contents
- Make a backup copy of Info.plist file then open it and change the key PreUSBBootSupportedModels to USBBootSupportedModels and save

However, when I clicked on the Create button in the last step, it said "Your bootable USB drive could not be created. An error occurred while copying the Windows installation files.".  Here are what I tried to fix the issue:

1. Unmount the Windows installation ISO file. I might clicked on it once and It was mounted. I tried to unmount it from both Finder and Disk Utility and the use Boot Cam Assistant to create it again but no luck. I've noted that the people on the net who got their problems solved using this way got the error message immediately after they click on the Create button. For me, the message showed up about 10 minutes after clicking on the Create button.

2. Someone said it might be the problem with the ISO file. They solved it by using Disk Utility to generate a new one from the current ISO file. They run the command:
hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o new_win7.iso /Volumes/DATA/Softwares/OS/Windows/Windows_7_Sp1_Ultimate_x64.iso
Unfortunately, it still didn't help.

3. I tried to use Windows USB/DVD Download Tool (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool#installation) to create a bootable USB instead. It's Windows program so I run Windows 8 as guest OS in VirtualBox and then used the tool to create a bootable USB. But, the tool couldn't create it successfully. It had another error. It told me to check my USB drive and the Windows installation ISO file. Damn!

4. And then I tried to install Windows using the ISO file in VirtualBox, it failed while it was trying to copy the installation files. It said some files were corrupted. Hence, I thought it might be the problem with that file so I downloaded two other different ISO files (from piratebay website) and used them with Boot Cam Assistant. I got the same error for the second ISO file but I successfully created the bootable USB using the third ISO file. I don't know why and I don't care.

Useful Applications I'm Using on My MacBook Pro

I'm using Macbook Pro 13'' late 2011 and Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8. Below are the required applications I used for my daily work.

Boom
My Macbook Pro's sound has become very low. I don't know why. Perhaps, there is a problem with the speaker. I use Boom as a workaround. It boost the speaker's volume above the allowed maximum.

PleaseSleep
When one of these applications: Chrome, Firefox, and Safari is running, your computer won't automatically sleep, only the display that will sleep even if you already configure it in Energy Saver. But, if you manually put it to sleep for example by pressing keys command + option + eject, it will. Note that in my case, the command "pmset -g assertions" does not say those programs are preventing my computer from sleeping at all but I figured it out myself. PleaseSleep will force your computer to sleep after it's been idled for a period of time as configured in Energy Saver even though those programs are running. IT STILL CAN'T HELP, IF BOOM IS RUNNING.

Sleepwatcher
It's a freeware and can be downloaded from http://www.bernhard-baehr.de/. I let me run command an event is triggered. In my case, Boom prevents my computer from sleeping after defined idle time. It's Boom's bug. I configured my machine to sleep 10 minutes after the display has slept so I use Sleepwatcher to exit Boom when the display has slept and start Boom when the display has woken up. I created 4 script files and put them in /Applications/MyApps as followings:

> sudo nano /Applications/MyApps/boom-sleepwatcher.command
#!/bin/bash

# check if sleepwatcher is running; it might have been running from previous login session
# cause it's not killed even if you log out
RUNNING=""
RUNNING=$(ps axu | grep -v grep | grep sleepwatcher)
echo $RUNNING

SCRIPTNAME="startboom.sh"
# if the content of RUNNING variable contains 'startboom.sh', the process is already running
if [ "$RUNNING" != "${RUNNING%$SCRIPTNAME*}" ];
  then
     echo "sleepwatcher is already running..."
     exit
  else
     echo "Starting sleepwatcher for Boom app..."
fi

/Applications/sleepwatcher/sleepwatcher --daemon --displaysleep /Applications/MyApps/exitboom.sh
/Applications/sleepwatcher/sleepwatcher --daemon --displaywakeup /Applications/MyApps/startboom.sh

> sudo nano /Applications/MyApps/exitboom.sh
osascript -e 'quit app "Boom"'

> sudo nano /Applications/MyApps/startboom.sh
open /Applications/Boom.app

> sudo chmod -R 777 /Applications/MyApps/

Note that if the terminal window is not closed after the command has run, there might be the problem with Terminal's shell settings. Open Terminal, go to Preferences..., select Settings then Shell and choose "Close the window" item in "When the shell exits" combo box.

Then, I put boom-sleepwatcher.command  in login items.

XtraFinder
It's free. It provides multiple tabs in a single window of Finder application.

Carbon Copy Cloner
It's commercial. I use it clone the OS drive to the external hard drive. It works the same way as Norton Ghost (for Windows) does. Hence, my OS disk fail, I don't have to reinstall the OS and applications. I can just restore the OS clone.

Perian
It allows me to play a lot of media file formats on QuickTime Player such as MP4, MP3, FLV, etc.

TextWrangler
It's a good text editor. It allows me to open multiple files at the same time.

Can't play video on browsers that requires Java plugin

I'm using Macbook Pro late 2011 with Mac OS X Mountain Lion v10.8. I like to watch movie online. Some sites require Java (Applet) plugin to play movies and I couldn't play them.

Below is the steps I solved it:
1). Download and install latest version of Java then restart your browser if it's running.
2). Enable Java applet plugin in your browser. Note that Chrome version 45 no longer supports NPAPI (technology required for Java applet) due to security risk so you cannot play videos on the sites that require Java applet on Chrome anymore. They might use HTML 5 instead to play videos. However, Firefox still support NPAPI so you might consider using it instead. You can enable the plugin by clicking Tools then Add-ons.

3). Add the site to Exception Site List in Java Control Panel. I installed Java 8 and it no longer has Medium security level. There are only Very High and High security levels so Java might block the site by default from using the plugin. Hence, you need to add the site to the exception list. You can go to System Preferences then Java.

4). Open the site or refresh the page and you'll get a popup at the top of the page asking you to allow the browser to run Java plugin for this site. You'll be asked to decide whether to allow it only this time or allow it forever.

5). Refresh the page again. After the page has loaded, it might takes several seconds before the dialog box below shows up.

Check the checkbox then click Run and your video will start playing.

Use AirDrop to send files from Mac to another nearby or iOS devices

Note that before OS X Yosemite, you can AirDrop files between Mac machines only. On OS X Yosemite, you can now AirDrop files from Mac machines to iOS devices and vice versa. However, this feature is not available for Macbook Pro pre-2012 even if it has Yosemite installed. Here how to do that https://support.apple.com/en-ap/HT203106

Stop Macbok Pro from overheating

I'm using Macbook Pro 13'' late 2011 and Mac OSX Mountain Lion v10.8. After I've been using it for over a year, I'm experiencing overheating on keyboard and trackpad. The machine turn too hot quickly may be 1 hour after starting. The CPU temperature is from 80 to 90 degree celsius. There are a lot of causes:
1. Swollen battery
2. Durst and dirty around the trackpad and fan
3. Too hot heat sink

I've reduced the temperature to around 60 degree celsius for normal usage such as web browsing by:
1. Cleaning dust inside my macbook (fan and logic board)
2. Installing smcFanControl application (it lets users increase minimum speed for the built-in fan so i can make my Intel Mac run cooler)
3. Putting display to sleep if the machine has been idled for 10 minutes and computer to sleep after the display has slept for 10 minutes. This is the default configuration though. It also help saving battery life. I configured it in Energy Saver preference.

You may want your computer prompt for password when you wake it up from sleep for more than 1 hour so it's not too annoying to enter password too often and also help secure your computer. You can do it in Security & Privacy preference.

4. Reapplying thermal paste. I didn't do this because I can't find the thermal paste in local stores here. You can apply it in between CPU and heat sink. It helps transfer the heat from CPU to heat sink so CPU doesn't get too hot. Here is how to reapply thermal paste.
5. Drilling holes on the bottom cover under the fan. I didn't do this but a lot of people said it did make their machines much cooler. You might consider buying a new bottom cover and drill holes on it instead of the original one.

Display sleep but the computer does not even already configured in Energy Saver

I'm using Macbook Pro 13'' late 2011 and Mac OS Mountain Lion 10.8. In Energy Saver settings, I configured the sleep mode as below.

The settings will put the display into sleep after 1 minute idle time and then 1 minute after that the computer will sleep too so the computer should go into sleep after the machine has been idled for 2 minutes. In my case, the display did sleep but the computer did not. If the computer is in sleep, the Sleep Indicator Light (SIL) is on and off slowly but mine is always on. You can check it by manually putting your computer into sleep. The SIL is at the front right bottom of the macbook. Please see the image below.

The cron job I set up and Boom app (boosting sound) are the culprits. The computer would not sleep if the cron job is running so i disabled it (crontab -r) and quit Boom app then it worked.

To check if there is a process preventing your computer from sleeping, run the following command:

$ pmset -g assertions
9/16/15 12:22:30 AM GMT+
Assertion status system-wide:
   PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep    0
   PreventSystemSleep             0

Sharing my Facebook page on my wall from iPhone

You can share a link of your Facebook page on your wall so that your friends can click on it to go to your page immediately. This is a better way than letting your friends search for your page because sometimes it doesn't show up in search result, and i don't know why.

1. Go to your page and then click on More

2. Copy the link of your page by clicking on Copy Link

3. Then, go to your wall to post the link of your page you have just copied.

4. Double tap on "What's on your mind?" and then you'll see the Paste black popup as bellow

Click on Paste and then the link of your page you copied will show up there and then click Post. You're done. The link to your page will appear on your wall.

VirtualBox: Accessing host's shared folders from guest Mac OS

To enable shared folder, while the guest OS is running you need to select Devices menu and then Insert Guest Additions CD Image... (Host + D). But, this feature does not support for guest Mac OS. To verify that, in host OS you can browse to /Applications/Virtualbox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso, in my case host OS is Mac OS Mountain Lion, and you will find these files: VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe, VBoxLinuxAdditions.run, VBoxSolariesAdditions.pkg but no *.app file for Mac OS.

There is an alternative way using File Sharing service of Mac OS X. Please follow the steps below.

1). On your host machine, open Network Preferences and then Sharing to share your folder or file:

* Make sure you provide Read & Write access permission on the shared file/folder to everyone

* We gonna share it using SMB service

2). On your guest OS, open Finder and select Go then Connect to Server... and type smb://10.0.2.2 and click Connect

Installing Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) on VirtualBox

Please follow the following steps:

1. Purchase Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion from Apple's Web Store

The downloaded installer should be a DMG file and when you mount it, you can see its content as in the following screenshot:

Some installer DMG file can't be mounted from Virtualbox because it contains only one file, an APP file. The APP file is used to reinstall (or do clean install) of existing Mac OS X you're currently on. You cannot use it as a bootable DVD. Hence, make sure you get the right one and I'm not sure why there are two different kinds of this file.

2. Create a new virtual machine the following settings:

- Set video memory to 60 MB
- Set RAM to more than 2048 MB, for example 2653 MB
- Create a new optical disk (CD/DVD ROM) and mount it to the installer (DMG) file. Don't forget to check Live CD/DVD checkbox
- Make the CD/DVD ROM drive is the first in boot order

3. Start the virtual machine and follow the instructions on the screen.

There will be a screen asked you to select a disk to install the OS on but there won't be any disk to select. You need to format the virtual hard drive:
- Select Utilities then Disk Utilities...
- Select the disk in the sidebar on the left and then click on Erase tab in the sidebar on the right
- Choose the file format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
- Click Erase button
And you'll now see the disk in the "select disk" screen and then follow the instruction on the screen.

4. It will ask you to restart after the installation's finished.

You might get an error when it starts again. You need to turn off the virtual machine and make it boot from the virtual hard disk instead of the virtual CD/DVD ROM drive.

When you boot from the virtual hard disk, you might get stuck as in the following screenshot. If it takes you too long to wait, you might need to shutdown the machine and start it again and then it should work this time.

Enabling NTFS Write Support on Mac OS

NTFS file format is recognized by default on Mac OS but you can only read from the NTFS formatted drives; you can't write to the drives. There are free and commercial packages for installing to enable NTFS write support. I chose to use Paragon, the commercial one. Some people downloaded the serial number or cracked version from www.thepiratebay.se. There are some reasons I don't use other packages:

1. Fuse for OS X and NTFS-3G (free)

The problem with this free package is my drive didn't mount sometimes.

2. Texura (commercial)

I tested it with the version 2014. It worked like a charm but there was a problem with Finder. I'm using XFinder to add multiple tab support to native Finder. While I was in dual pane mode showing two tabs in the same Finder window, I couldn't click on my NTFS drive name under Devices list in the left pane of Finder.

3. Paragon (commercial)

I've been using it (v8.0) on Mac OS Mountain Lion v10.8 and no problem at all. My One thing to note about it is it adds two file formats, Windows NT Filesystem (compressed) and Windows NT Filesystem support for you to choose when you want to erase your partition from Disk Utility. But, I couldn't erase my partition using Windows NT Filesystem. Everytime I clicked Erase button, Windows NT Filesystem (compressed) format was selected instead. However, I see no differences between these two file formats. I've read about NTFS (on Wikipedia) and there is only one NTFS, in which you can enable compression on drives, files or folders. Moreover, my NTFS drive once formatted using Texura driver appeared as NTFS (compressed) too when I browsed it in Disk Utility with Paragon driver installed.

Setting up Wireless Access Point using Apple's Airport Express

I'm using ADSL internet connection at my home, in which there is a cable from ISP connected directly into my modem. I want to set up a wifi network from it. The only thing I need is Airport Express. I just plugged in the ethernet cable from the modem to the Airport Express and configure it as following:

1. Connecting modem to Airport Express

2. Configuring the Airport Express from MacBook/iPhone/iPad by using Airport Utility application. The application come with Mac OS X by default. You need to download and install the app for iPhone and iPad. The steps below show how to configure it.

Mac OS X: Put your machine to sleep automatically when low battery

I don't want my machine shutdown because of out of battery because I may get the issues such as losing unsaved tasks and my hard drive is not mounted when the machine starts again. The Energy Saver settings in Mac OS X can put my machine to sleep after it has been idled for a period of time but it can't help in my case because most of the time I leave the music player app running so my machine is never idle.

Thus, I created an AppleScript that automatically put my machine to sleep when the battery is lower than %15. The script will be executed every 3 minutes by a cron job. For info, I'm using Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.

1. Create the Apple script

Open AppleScript Editor and insert the following code and save it as SleepWhenLowBattery.scpt in /Applications/MyApps/ directory.

property lowBattery : 15

set battStatus to do shell script "pmset -g ps"
if battStatus contains "Battery Power" then
 set {TID, text item delimiters} to {text item delimiters, ";"}
 set battStatus to text items of battStatus
 set text item delimiters to tab
 set battStatus to text 1 thru -2 of last text item of item 1 of battStatus as integer
 set text item delimiters to TID

 if battStatus < lowBattery then
  tell application "Finder"
   activate
   set alertResult to display alert ¬
    "Low battery! Your machine is going to sleep in 90 seconds..." buttons {"Cancel", "Sleep Now"} as warning ¬
    default button ¬
    "Cancel" cancel button ¬
    "Cancel" giving up after 90

   if gave up of alertResult then
    do shell script "pmset sleepnow"
   else if button returned of alertResult is "Sleep Now" then
    do shell script "pmset sleepnow"
   end if

  end tell
 end if
end if
return 60

This script checks the current battery status. If it's lower than the defined value, it displays an alert saying that the machine is going to sleep in 90 seconds and the user can choose to sleep now or cancel.

Below is the sample output of the command 'pmset -g ps'  while charging:
$ pmset -g ps
Currently drawing from 'AC Power'
 -InternalBattery-0 60%; charging; (no estimate)
Below is the sample output of the command 'pmset -g ps'  while discharging:
$ pmset -g ps
Currently drawing from 'Battery Power'
 -InternalBattery-0 61%; discharging; (no estimate)
So, the script will put your computer into sleep only if your machine is not charging.

Another note about the script is that the code to display the alert need to be put in 'tell application "finder"' block or you'll get the error message below logged by the cron job in /var/mail/${username} file. Without that block, the script can still be executed manually by the user from Terminal.
/Applications/MyApps/SleepWhenLowBattery.scpt: execution error: No user interaction allowed. (-1713)

2. Create a cron job to run the script every 3 minutes

Open Terminal and type:
crontab -e
It will open crontab configuration file in VI editor. And then press 'I' key to be able to write into the file and insert the following line.
*/3 * * * * osascript /Applications/MyApps/SleepWhenLowBattery.scpt
After that, press 'Esc' key and type ':wq' to save change and quit the VI editor. Please note that the cron job running interval should be greater than the waiting time before machine sleeps (90 seconds) defined in the script above or you will get more than one alerts on your screen if you don't close them. This cron job does not run for all users; it's for the current user only.

Now, you're done; you DON'T need to restart your machine or logout.

Missing embedded player when sharing Youtube video on Facebook

When I shared a youtube URL, there is thumbnail image instead of an embedded player. Hence, every time you click on the thumbnail, you're redirected to youtube website. You can't play it directly on Facebook. The URL shared might look like following:

What I want it to be is:

The reason is the video owner disabled embedding. We can't do anything about that if we're not the owner. You can see whether the embedding is enabled or not by clicking on the Share icon then Embed and you'll see as in the image below if embedding is disabled.

If embedding is enabled, you'll see as following:

You might have to look for another video that embedding is enabled.

Failed to open or import Maven project in IntelliJ IDEA

I'm using IntelliJ IDEA 14 on Mac OSX Lion and I hadn't had any problems with opening or importing Maven projects before I updated Java from 1.6 to 1.8. The IDE started successfully but every time I opened or imported an existing Maven project, a popup appeared to display the progress of opening or importing process for a short time but after that nothing happened. Then, I opened the Console application and I see the log message below:
3/31/15 1:05:18.637 AM [0x0-0x8d38d3].com.jetbrains.intellij.ce:   Referenced from: /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/java
3/31/15 1:05:18.637 AM [0x0-0x8d38d3].com.jetbrains.intellij.ce: Reason: image not found
It means that IDEA was still using JDK 1.6 and it no longer existed on my machine after the update. I solved the problem by telling it to use the JDK 1.8 instead when starting and building projects. To do it, I did as followings:

1). Open the IDEA's configuration file:
open -e /Applications/IntelliJ\ IDEA\ 14\ CE.app/Contents/Info.plist

2). Update the following key
<key>JVMVersion</key>
<string>1.7+</string>
I have both JDK 1.7 and 1.8 on my machine.

3). Restart the IDE

Lenovo ThinkPad: The labtop does not wake up after suspending

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 with Lenovo ThinkPad E440 and I'm having the issue that my labtop does not wake up after a suspend. I have to restart the machine. It's a bug of that model, reported here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1340376. I fixed the issue by disabling USB 3.0 in BIOS (note that disabling USB 3.0 in BIOS will make the USB ports work as 2.0). This is not the real solution but it worked.

Ubuntu: Disabling mouse movement while typing

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 on my labtop Lenovo ThinkPad E440. The problem is mouse is moving while I'm typing. I already disabled it in the Mousepad setting but it didn't work.

Here are the steps to solve it:

1). Kill syndamon processes
killall syndaemon
2). Disable touchpad while typing
syndaemon -i 0.6 -KRd
-i : How many seconds to wait after the last key press before enabling the touchpad. (default is 2.0s).
-K : Ignore modifier keys and Modifier+Key combos when monitoring keyboard activity.
-R : Use the XRecord extension for detecting keyboard activity instead of polling the keyboard state.
-d : Start as a daemon, ie in the background to avoid the command open your terminal.

3). Add the command to /etc/profile file
/usr/bin/syndaemon -i 0.6 -d -K -R

4). Uncheck the option to disable touchpad while typing in System Settings so they don't interfere with each other which may make your mouse not work sometimes.
